FIX OneDrive Sync problems on Windows 10.
OneDrive is one of the most popular cloud storage services accessible today. With Windows 10, OneDrive is pre-installed, and users may use it to store and access files across many devices. However, OneDrive, like any other piece of software, is not without its flaws.
The syncing issues in OneDrive is the most common problem that users have reported. This means that the OneDrive Client on the Desktop won't be able to update the files to the OneDrive cloud service.
If you cannot synchronize your files with OneDrive, or OneDrive is stuck on "Sync pending", don’t worry. In this guide, we have compiled different ways of fixing the OneDrive Sync problems faced in Windows 10.
How to FIX: OneDrive Synchronization Issues in Windows 10 (Cannot Sync Files with OneDrive, OneDrive Sync Pending, OneDrive Not Syncing, etc..)
Method 1: Close & Restart your OneDrive Application.
When there are connection issues, the files won’t sync. In such cases, restarting the OneDrive application would help.
1. Right-click on the OneDrive icon on the Taskbar.*
* Note: If cannot see the icon, click on the Show hidden icons and check if the icon is present there.
2. Choose Close OneDrive from the menu.
3. Type OneDrive in the search bar next to the Start symbol.
4. Double-click on the topmost search result.
5. Now, try to sync the files and check if it works.
Method 2: Move the file from the sync folder to a different folder.
When you see the Sync icon stuck for a long time, try moving some of the files from the sync folder to another folder that is not linked to OneDrive.
1. Right-click on the OneDrive icon on the taskbar.
* Note: If cannot see the icon, click on the Show hidden icons and check if the icon is present there.
2. Click on the downward arrow next to Pause syncing.
3. Choose 2 hours from the drop-down menu.
4. Go to your sync folder, or if you are not sure of the OneDrive location, click on the one drive icon and choose Open Folder.
5. Move some of the files to a different folder that is not associated with OneDrive. (For example to a folder on your Desktop.)
6. Now, right-click on OneDrive icon and choose Resume Syncing.
7. Check if the syncing issue has been resolved. If it did, move those files back to the Sync folder.
Method 3: Unlink and re-Sign-in to your OneDrive account.
1. Right-click on the OneDrive icon on the Taskbar.
2. Choose Settings from the menu.
3. At Account tab, click on Unlink this PC.
4. Click on Unlink account in the confirmation dialog that shows up.
5. Now click Add an account. (A OneDrive Sign-in window shows up automatically on your screen)
6. Enter your email address and click on the Sign in button.
7. You will be prompted for the password. Enter your password and click on Sign in
8. Follow the instructions and complete the setup process.
9. Check if the sync issue resolved.
Method 4: Reset your One Drive Account.
1. Hold down the Windows key  and press the R key to open the Run command-box.
2. In the window, type the following command and hit Enter: *
- %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
* Note: If you notice an error "Windows cannot find…", after executing the command, try executing the below commands,
For 32-bit machines:
- C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
For a 64-bit machine:Â
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
3. Now, try opening OneDrive. You can do so by searching on the search box next to the Start symbol.
4. Double-click on the top-most result.
5. Try signing in and check if the sync issue resolves.
Method 5: Check if there is enough storage in OneDrive
1. Right-click on the OneDrive icon on the Taskbar.
2. Choose Settings from the menu.
Â
3. Make sure you are in the Account tab and check if you have enough storage
Method 6: Ensure that Filenames & Filetypes are Supported.
OneDrive Sync issues are seen when:
- Filetypes are not supported: The Temporary TMP files will not be synced to OneDrive. Also some files that are used by Windows such as the "desktop.ini", or the ".ds_store" on macOS, are not synced. *
* Note: The following names aren't allowed for files or folders: .lock, CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM0 – COM9, LPT0 – LPT9, _vti_, desktop.ini, any filename starting with ~$.
- File Path is too long. The maximum number of characters in a file path including filename should be 400 characters. In such cases, give a shorter name for the filename or sub-folders.
- Filename contains characters such as: " * : < > ? / \ |
